Celebrate National Buy Black Week with local businesses

June 17-23 is National Buy Black Week, with a goal to ignite Black economic freedom by investing the trillions of dollars spent yearly back into the Black community. While it's important to support national and international Black-owned businesses, it's even more beneficial to support local Black-owned businesses to ensure the money goes directly back into the Pittsburgh community.

Below, we're highlighting a few local Black-run retailers and restaurants. For a complete list check out cocoapreneur.com, created by Khamil Scantling to give more exposure to businesses owned by African Americans. Visitors to the site can browse Black-owned businesses through filters such as neighborhood and business categories (ie., bars and nightlife, auto, apparel, and more).

Savoy

Created by Chuck Sanders to showcase Black excellence in the area of fine dining, Savoy offers an artfully crafted brunch and dinner menu in addition to a weekly Jazz night run by Sanders' brother, Charles.

Arts & Crafts: Botanica & Occult Shop

Short for Dark Arts and Witch Crafts, this east side shop is home to a variety of products and ingredients used in rituals and general daily life like candles, sage, and holy water.

Ujamaa Collective

Founded with the intention to "create spaces, opportunities, networks, education, and support for Africana women to grow as entrepreneurs, artisans, and servant-leaders," Ujamaa Collective carries African-centered books, clothing, jewelry, and more.

Naptural Beauty Supply

Naptural Beauty Supply is helping natural hair shine by providing the tools, services, and knowledge necessary to aid the natural hair journey. All of its products are coconut based, chemical free, and not tested on animals.

The Tiny Bookstore

Located in the Pines Shops at Pines Plaza, The Tiny Bookstore can be easily missed. But this local indie shop is one to check out. The store sells new books, bargain books, gifts, and toys; holds programs for children of all ages; and even sells online for those who prefer internet shopping.

Carmi Soul Food Restaurant

You don't have travel that far or break out the pots and pans when a craving for soul food happens. Carmi's on East Carson Street has soul food classics — like fried chicken, mac and cheese, and cornbread — made with fresh ingredients from local farmers' markets available from 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
