Street-dance group a hit at the arts fest

New York City-based Breakatronz has been drawing crowds numbering in the hundreds for its unannounced performances at the fest's Stanwix stage.

The five dancers, plus a drummer and a portable sound-system, do a fast-paced 20-minute show combining comedy and impressive acrobatic and street-dance skills.
"We're from the Bronx," they say (talking in unison being part of their engaging, if occasionally salty shtick). "The safe part."
They do stuff like handstands — on one hand — backflips and vaulting over rows of audience volunteers. For gas money, they pass the hat. (The accompanying photos are from the 5 p.m. show this past Sunday.)
Back home — where the the New York Daily News named them the city's best street performers in 2011 — they play the subway, the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, bar mitzvahs, whatever.
Group founder T.J. tells CP they also just performed in Vegas, and are bound for Washington, D.C., after the festival.
But they're here in Pittsburgh on spec, as it were. While not booked for the Three Rivers Arts Festival, they've been OK'd to perform between scheduled performances at the Stanwix stage. T.J. said on Sunday that the idea is to get themselves hired for next year's Arts Fest. A spokesperson for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, which runs the festival, confirms that the Trust plans to follow up with the group regarding 2015.
Breakatronz will continue performing at the Stanwix stage whenever the stage is unscheduled for an hour between bands. They might perform again as soon as Thursday and as late as Sunday, but it looks like your best bets will be on Saturday at 2, 4 and 6 p.m.
