Ellen Fleurov has left the South Side photography gallery after four years in the post.

Fleurov departed the Silver Eye Center for Photography at the end of May, says Silver Eye spokesperson Juliana Zipay. Zipay says Fleurov’s departure was by mutual agreement between her and the nonprofit group’s board. She added that Fleurov has relocated to the Philadelphia area, to be closer to her mother.

Silver Eye had not announced Fleurov’s departure prior to speaking to CP today.

Fleurov herself could not immediately be reached for comment. Her profile on the professional networking site LinkedIn now lists her as an “independent curator and photography consultant” based in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Silver Eye is currently being led by interim executive director Mary Navarro, formerly of the Heinz Endowment and now an independent nonprofit-management consultant. Zipay said that Silver Eye’s programming will proceed as scheduled.

Fleurov came to Silver Eye in 2009. Previously, she had been chief curator of education and founding curator of the department of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. She later served as director of the Museum, California Center for the Arts, and headed an arts consulting firm she founded.

Silver Eye, based on the South Side, is Pittsburgh’s premiere gallery devoted exclusively to photography. Its website says that it “is the only organization in Western Pennsylvania dedicated solely to the understanding, appreciation, education and promotion of photography as an art form and as an expressive form of visual communication.” With roots dating back to 1979, Silver Eye runs exhibitions year-round as well as educational programs for photographers and photography enthusiasts.
