Over the past 20 years, anyone in need of a tiki bar for their tropical theme party or a classic car for their 1950s bash could look to The Prop Shop for the perfect items. Now over-the-top event organizers will have to find another supplier, as the party rental company has announced plans to close its doors and sell its inventory.
Located in East Liberty, The Prop Shop warehouse has provided furniture, illuminated decor, and other items for various types of events. Now that Prop Shop owner, Steve Weiner, plans to retire, the public will have a chance to buy a piece of the company this July.
“As I head into retirement, I’m hoping that the props find new owners that will continue to make memories with the items,” says Weiner.
The Prop Shop claims to have the region’s largest and most diverse collection of party props, including period-specific items, backdrops, and popular themes like circus, sports, and safari.
Key pieces include a giant jukebox, a full retro 1950s diner, a pirate ship, a replica of the castle from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, and one of Pittsburgh's "Three Sisters" bridges.
Weiner says that, over the years, Prop Shop has supplied corporate events, weddings, trade shows, and personal celebrations like birthday parties and weddings. It also shipped and delivered props across the United States and Europe.
“In thinking about the most memorable events, the fundraising events or galas stand out because they were raising money for important community causes,” says Weiner.
He believes that, while the Prop Shop might be leaving, its inventory will likely keep popping up as local businesses, as well as individuals, buy and continue to use them.
The props can be viewed on The Prop Shop website, and items will be sold by appointment only from July 8-14.
