It certainly wasn’t a pretty one for the Steelers against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Don’t get me wrong, the weather was gorgeous. I’ll take 80 degrees and sunshine for as many assignments as I can get. But the quality of play from the hometown team was quite dreary. For the purpose of this piece, I won’t let what happened on the field take away from a number of nice moments that occurred at Heinz Field.
It was neat to see former Pitt star James Conner in his first start at home as a Steeler. He certainly has won over fans as Le’Veon Bell no-shows. He also honored the late Mac Miller by wearing customized cleats. During the game, Conner made an incredibly acrobatic catch that was ruled incomplete because he only got one foot in bounds while being interfered with by a Chiefs defender.
From a personal standpoint, the Steelers’ home opener was the first game during which I didn’t rely on a brace for support. (I had knee surgery in August.) I still can’t run up and down the field like I’m used to doing. And kneeling isn’t an option at this point, so my visual perspective is a bit limited. But hopefully at the next Steelers home game — Sun., Sept. 30, against the Ravens — I’ll be back to normal.
