Grassroots campaigners are making a last push to sign people up for the federal Marketplace health care plans under the Affordable Care Act before the approaching Feb. 15 deadline.

"We want to make sure that as many people as possible who are Marketplace eligible sign up now," says Sean Murphy of Enroll America.

In this last push, Enroll America, which focuses on ACA outreach by serving as a referral agency for local nonprofits, will hold an enrollment event today at the Community College of Allegheny County's Allegheny Campus, on Pittsburgh's North Side, along with Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania, the Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania, and the Consumer Health Coalition.

"CCAC has been a great partner in helping us give a chance [to enroll] youth in Allegheny County; people on the North Side; folks who are able to travel here from the Hill District and people from the  West End who can just hop across the bridge. That’s why we’re holding this event here today," Murphy says. The organization has held more than 50 outreach events at various locations around the county since November.

Murphy says that at the close of the government's open enrollment period last year, nearly 29,000 Allegheny County residents had enrolled — 318,000 statewide — and that campaigners want to "make sure that as many of those remaining in the [eligible] group as possible sign up."

So far, nearly 440,000 Pennsylvanians have enrolled since November; 73,000 are from the Pittsburgh area, according to the latest U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services numbers.

Those who miss the deadline but have a "qualifying life event,"  like a change in income, getting married, having a child, becoming a U.S. citizen, or turning age 26, can sign-up after Feb. 15 during a special enrollment period.
