Last night, City Paper won seven Golden Quill Awards, presented by the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, the most Quills won by any publication in the non-daily newspaper division. CP arts editor Bill O’Driscoll won three awards all by his lonesome. Looks like somebody’s going to be asking for a bigger cubicle soon.

On the down side, one staffer who attended the ceremony was back in the office before 9 this morning. That’s a clear sign that tightening newspaper salaries, combined with a cash bar at the award ceremony, are hurting our ability to gather news effectively.

The winning City Paper entries were:

— Charlie Deitch’s “Pet Cause,” for investigative/enterprise reporting.

— Bill O’Driscoll for “Chronic Conditions” (in the health/medical category), “Uncommon Senselessness” (cultural reporting) and “Building a Movement” (sports).

— Melissa Meinzer’s “Escape Artist,” for feature writing.

— Justin Hopper for “Chasing the Buzz” in the science/technology category

— The theater criticism of Robert Isenberg.

City Paper also had three finalists in the Quills: Sean Hamill’s “Long Road Back” in the feature category; Adam Fleming’s “Flood of Interest” in the enterprise/investigative category, and Chris Young’s continuing coverage of negotiations involving the Community Benefits Agreement for the Hill District.
