This is pretty tone deaf. A white urban safari into a black neighborhood to get portraits of each other in front of ruin porn. Calling this an essay does not mean it has anything to say and the “photographers” who admit to knowing nothing about the area and have taught us nothing in return.
You could have done a story on Homewood locals and how they see their neighborhood through their photographs and how they interact with their environment. Instead you have a group of well to do tourists interacting with garbage cans.
Once again this city has marginalized the voices of the African American community. It makes me sad.
You are the one marginalizing people by saying things like “white urban safari” “black neighborhood” and “well to do tourists”. Sounds borderline racist with a touch of racial profiling.
