Adam DeSimone didn’t want another bar on East Carson Street. That wouldn’t be surprising if he were just another South Side resident. But he’s the owner of Diesel Club Lounge — and when he decided to open a business at 1737 East Carson, another bar would’ve been an easy choice.

“You open a bar and the money starts pouring in,” DeSimone says.

Instead he opened Delanie’s Coffee, a quiet, inviting oasis named after his baby daughter. He says diversifying is good for both the neighborhood and his business (AMPD Group, which also owns Local Bar & Kitchen and other restaurants).

Kelly Wilson, one of two managers who helped open the shop last month, admits to keeping an air mattress upstairs: It’s for nights when she closes after midnight and has to re-open the next morning.

“I haven’t burnt out yet,” she says with a smile. “I love this; it doesn’t feel like work to me.”

Delanie’s caters to a niche: folks looking for a friendly, quiet spot to get work done and have a cuppa. It’s not corporate, but it’s also not quite as eclectic as other South Side establishments.

The ultimate goal, says Wilson: a sense of community.

“We remember your drink, remember your face,” she says, noting that the shop already has a cast of regulars. “We like when new faces become familiar faces.”
