dear-pittsburgh-penguins-fan.html

Dear Pittsburgh Penguin fan,My name is AJ, and I’m a Kansas City native and avid hockey fan still living in the Midwest. I understand that you are in a slight bit of panic right now over the potential loss of one of your favorite teams, the NHL’s Penguins. … However, in reading your dozens, if not hundreds of statements about the current situation between your team and their possible move to my hometown, I have become somewhat agitated by your constant pissing and moaning that emanates from your rusted out motor home. … Who the hell do you think you are?

You people act like you’re fans of the ’27 Yankees. You didn’t even get your team until the late ’60s. You speak online and in newspaper letters to the editor as if you are doing the NHL a favor by going to games every night the past couple of seasons. … I’m pretty sure I could put the Penguins in Des Moines or Little Rock and people would come out to see the wealth of young talent you people have on your (or is it “our” team yet?). Where the hell were you after Mario retired? Where the hell were you when various owners asked for new arenas back in the day?

So you see, it’s hard for the rest of us to feel sorry for you when you turned your back on your team not so long ago. … I don’t know if the Pens are coming to Kansas City, it’s not up to me. However, if they do come to KC, I won’t shed a tear as I watch Sydney fly around the ice at a jewel of an arena in downtown KC. Sincerely,AJ — Future Kansas City Pens fan

  1. City Paper does a hit piece against Pittsburgh folks.

    Great selection editors.

Then they put it under a blogger headline.

    Go figure.

  2. I’m not sure what you’re implying here, Mark. But if you’re suggesting we ginned up a Penguins-bashing statement and then tried to pass it off as a blog post, you’re off base. Check the link for yourself; it’s genuine. We don’t make this stuff up. If, on the other hand, you’re suggesting we shouldn’t quote blogs that make fun of Pittsburgh, I guess we’ll have to just disagree. I think most Pittsburghers can handle it. Anyway, in this case, it seems the last laugh is on Kansas City.

  3. Memo to AJ: Man,it must have hurt you down to the core when the announcement was made that the Pens were staying put. NOW what’s going to go into your hockey puck-shaped arena? The Kansas City Brigade of Arena Football and the Big 12 tourney. That’ll take up,what,15 dates max? Oh,BTW,if you’re such a big hockey fan,why didn’t you support the NHL the first time they came through?(Probably before your time.)Or the IHL’s Blades? One more thing,AJ: It’s Sidney, not Sydney. If you’re such a hockey buff, you certainly can get stuff like that right.

News flash: People will support a winner,or at the least,a team that busts its tail even if their record isn’t great. When times are tough, you’ll get the hardcore fans and not much more.

On a personal note: I’m from Buffalo, and we can certainly emphasize with Pens fans. We went through the same emotions a few years ago when it seemed as if the Sabres were heading out of town. No one deserves that fate. NO ONE.
