Employees at the Rivers Casino say their employer has been cutting its workers’ hours to avoid providing them with health insurance. Under the Affordable Care Act, employees working 30 hours or more must receive health insurance, but those at a protest outside of the casino earlier today say management has been trying to skirt the requirement.
“Not only are they not giving workers enough hours to qualify for healthcare, those who do work 30 hours, they’re reducing their hours so they don’t qualify,” said Jack Shea, president of the Allegheny County Labor Council.

A coalition of workers known as the Steel City Casino Workers Council has been fighting to unionize casino employees for more than a year now with the help of Unite Here, a North American labor union. Members of the council believe unionizing is the best way to ensure their hours aren’t cut and to increase their wages.
“We’re fighting for a fair process,” said Nicole Gallagher, a casino cocktail server. “Personally, not having the protection of a union, I’ve been subjected to terrible intimidation.”
The council claims casino management has intimidated and even fired employees to prevent them from forming a union. Last year Unite Here filed more than 30 charges of unfair labor practices against the Rivers Casino’s owners but since then the casino has agreed to post flyers notifying employees of their right to unionize.
“Rivers Casino is proud to have been voted a ‘2014 Best Places to Work’ by our Team Members, and we respect their rights to choose whether to be represented by a union,” casino spokesperson Jack Horner said in a statement. “So far, our Team Members have chosen to remain independent.”
The casino did not respond to questions about the alleged intimidation. But Unite Here representative Jon Scolnik says the intimidation has continued.
“What we want is for the casino to play fair,” Scolnik said “They’ve violated labor laws and until they play fair we’re going to keep doing this.”
The workers were joined by employees at a casino in Philadelphia, owned in part by one of the partners in the Pittsburgh casino, who also complained of unfair treatment of workers. Union workers throughout Pittsburgh representing organizations like the Service Employees International Union and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union were also there to show support.
“All of those unfair labor practices corporations are pushing to keep people from earning a living need to stop,” said Tina Schreckengost, a union employee at Giant Eagle who came out to support the casino workers.

All of these union minded idiots need to take a hike, the rivers is a great place to work with awesome benefits. Part time means part time if you dont like it apply for full time or go get another job
I work at the rivers casino and I love my job I have never been intimidated by anyone I’ve had conversation with the GM and assistant GM never ounce have I felt any wrong doing these people just want to complain about what they can so somebody will give them a handout if you want something you work hard not throw a fit and complain till you get your way like a child
Where’s my comment
These above persons are obviously scum-sucking shills for the management of Rivers Casino, the types that impede any meaningful progress in the US, the types that need to be pushed down a flight of stairs or thrown under a city bus.
You act like there is an abundance of full time jobs and that all hard working people can just find one anywhere. Many hard workers are stuck with part time jobs because corporations want to keep it that way. It’s nothing more than a clever bail out from providing health care to the very people who labor hard, raking in billions for the corporations, while barely making a few dollars of their own. What a gross disgusting mentality to think that hard workers who don’t make enough to survive just want a handout. It’s narrow minded and lacks any rational and/or intelligent thought.
There is nothing a money grabbing union can do to improve the working conditions at Rivers Casino. Only thing a union will do is take your money and protect the people who are lazy and shouldn’t be working there in the first place. We have great benefits we do have problems at the casino but the union will just hurt us more than it will hurt us. You guys talk about part timers not getting enough hours. That is the meaning of part time. Look it up if you have to. We do not want a union.
Before I was working at the casino I was working at a union grocery store. I was only part time. I was not allowed full time hours there were only 3 full time employees in my department. The rest was part time. I wouldn’t of been able to get a full time position in my department because all the full timers were there for 10 + years and wasn’t going anywhere. I needed a full time job and I knew I had to search and apply to places. I looked hard. there are full time jobs out there. You just got to put in the time and look. They are not just going to jump up and say “hey here is a good job for you” again you applied to a part time position. stop complaining about the hours you aren’t getting.
You think corporations are money hungry. Start looking at what union bosses make. While you aee making $9/hr. Unions bosses are making millions because you give them the money to do so.
You’re sore because you couldn’t just walk into a workplace and take the job of somebody who has been there for over ten years? That’s just not fair, and you’re talking about greed?
no i’m saying a union isn’t going to help part time workers get hours….when you are part time you only get part time hours…that’s it no more…The union isn’t going to help you get hours when you are part time…you lose
oh i do have something to say. when ur a cook and u can be lazy, i dont blame u for not wanting to be in a union. but i promise u being lazy is going to stop. because we are all done with it. so its not about the union its about doing ur job. so dont trash the union until u can say u are a good worker. now me not to brag im a damn good no great worker. ask anyone. can u say the same thing? not even close. ill go blind folded and still do a better job. don’t knock something unless u can be better. and trust me u cant. so just don’t say anything.
the union bosses dont make nothing like the so called ceo’s. u are so missed informed its a joke!. go look at what union bosses make vs well yell anyone else. ur an ass donk thats has no idea what ur talking about. ur boss now laughs at u and how much more he makes than u. and u like to bend over and take it. well i can only hope for u that u make enough money to buy some lube!!!!!!!!!
wow ur work place loves u. they want to no if its ok if they hike up ur insurance and make u bend over and take it?? after all its what ur doing. so keep bending over while they cut ur healthcare. but after u get sore maybe u see things well after u get cream to help that
Um excuse me. Been at the casino 4 1/2 years. And during those years I have never called off nor have I ever been late. Come to work early and stay late if necessary. Came in on days off plenty of times because someone called off. So don’t you even dare call the cooks who don’t want a union lazy buddy. Insurance has gone up a little because of the new healthcare law. Look that up. We get PTO hours up the wazoo, sick days, holiday pay, healthcare, free parking, cheap lunches, bonuses if we get perfect attendance, raises every year, raises to just to keep up with the market, 401k, and much more. You guys can promise the moon & the stars doesn’t mean you can actually deliver. You are just like any politician you will say anything to “get elected” i have actually looked up other casinos contracts and this unions other contracts with different companies they are so unimpressive
Unions suck

Would you like me to post more about how much union bosses make
As for benefits I was part time at casino and I got them you just got to work hours to get them. I know I made some mistakes there that’s why I got fire but I will get something else.
The union wants one thing money so they lie to you union supports and say what you wanna hear. Trust be do research on Huffington Post, which is a better news site and they tell you the truth over the money grubbing unions. Anyway the fall of the unions are here #stopUnionization
Here’s a question for you who are in love with the union. Why aee you so afraid of the movement of “right to work” if you have no idea what I am talking about. Its where if your company decides to unionize workers can opt out. Unions are fighting this tooth and nail. Are you guys afraid there won’t be enough workers to help your delusion that unions are the best thing since sliced bread?
Another thing that has been nagging me for a very long time. Why do you guys think its ok for you to harass us at home and or when we are having lunch. Every single person who has been working at the casino for a week knows about your ridiculous movement to get the casino unionized don’t you think if we supported your ideas we would come to you. I have been lucky. I was only approach once during lunch and once at home. Good thing I know my rights and word got out to not to come to me but than you go after the people who don’t speak English well and or new hires who don’t have a clue what the hell is going on. Yeah some integrity you guys got going on there
It’s not about how much union management makes, or about how much casino management makes. It’s about how much the workers at the casino make. Unionized workers consistently earn more and have better access to benefits than nonunion workers. They also have better recourse in cases of harassment and discrimination. You only have to look to the Meadows to see that workers at the Rivers are underpaid relative to their local industry counterparts. It’s clear the industry can bear the cost, so why not better reward the people who are directly responsible for the casino’s success? And how on earth can better pay and better job security for the hardworking people who wok directly with the customers every day be considered a handout? Nonsense.
Granted, there are a few blue collar employees, such as the ones in this thread, who are deeply offended and angry at the idea of raises and better benefits, but why stand in the way of coworkers who are so heavily reliant on tips to feed their families? If you’re really that passionate about saving money for Neil Bluhm, then I’m sure you can always cut him a personal check for the difference after the union negotiates you a raise.
And Julie, unions aren’t afraid of “Right to Work” legislation. Rather, unions – aka blue collar workers who want better lives for themselves, their families, and their coworkers – sensibly recognize that the clout necessary to negotiate with corporations and other massive, well-resourced entities, can only be achieved when workers stick together. And the state, in turn, very sensibly recognizes that workers on the ground level should be protected from exploitation by a handful of badly informed coworkers who operate in league with management. In short, unions don’t want to be undermined by people who spread misinformation and distractions, as has happened throughout this thread.
(“Right to Work,” as it happens, is grossly misleading, as it has nothing to do with any kind of right to work. Qualified workers have as much a right to work in a state like PA as they do a so-called “Right to Work” state.)
I personally am a member of Unite Here Local #57 which represents the hospitality and casinos in Pittsburgh. I support the Rivers joining our team! I have great pay, benefits, seniority, PTO and many other benefits.
I stand behind a strong leadership that the people have elected. Yes they make a living but are not rich or overpaid.
Keep fighting and we stand behind you 100%.
It’s a paradox, but people too stupid to unionize get the pay and benefits that befit people of their stupidity.
