Sun Ray, Shining Light
“Columbus Day/Salt March” 7-inch
(Self-released)
New instrumental post-rock from former members of Dawn Canon and Lushwell. Both songs are pretty; the A-side, “Columbus Day,” is pretty stock math-y post-rock material, but the B-side, “Salt March,” is an unfolding beauty. A single should leave ’em wanting more, and this one does.

The Deceptions
Tall Tales From Green Meadow
(Self-released)
Character-driven folk tunes from the local four-piece; sweet songs, and well put-together. The project here was to create songs based on American life, and the goal was met. It’s hard, though, to record storytelling songs with a vocal delivery that feels meaningful, and the less-than-strong vocals paired with mostly mid-tempo songs court boredom every now and again.

Surrounded by Mice
Surrounded by Mice
(Self-released)
Surrounded by Mice seems to draw inspiration from all over the lo-fi map — Joan of Arc, Dino Jr and Sonic Youth come to mind — and, somewhat charmingly, its ramshackle debut record sounds like it’s held together with packing tape. There are some strange and jarring moments and, with nearly every unpredictable song clocking under 3 minutes, it’s a wild ‘n’ wooly ride until you land softly in the final, extended freak-out noise jam.

SURROUNDED BY MICE CD RELEASE. 9 p.m. Thu., March 15. Howlers, 4509 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield
