Winter Guide

Get Outside

No need to let cold temperatures -- or even the lack of them -- keep you inside this winter. Not only are Pittsburghers noted for being a hearty lot, but the U.S. Department of Health is calling for Americans to get more exercise. Tailgating doesn't count, but there are plenty of other excuses to get outdoors, fill your lungs with frosty air and be active.

Warm your heart by taking a dog with no home for a brisk walk. Break in the global-positioning device Santa gave you to track down a "treasure" guided only by satellites and common sense. When the snows come, test your mettle on snowshoes, cross-country skis or ice skates. A short hike or bike ride in a state park knows no season, though you may be surprised to learn the advantages winter brings.

We sent our crack staff out to investigate these outdoor activities and to compile a list of resources. Now, wrap up, and get outside.
