Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself

Gloomy Glaswegian Wilbur (Jamie Sives) bungles another suicide attempt and returns to the care of his older brother Harbour (Adrian Rawlins), who manages their late father's cluttered old bookshop. A kind soul, Harbour soon takes in a young single mother (Shirley Henderson) and her 9-year-old daughter. The four manage an odd sort of household-in-disarray until a sad twist of fate forces them to be a real family. This bittersweet domestic drama from Danish director Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners) nonetheless has wonderful moments of mordant comedy (Wilbur is much beloved for being a dreadful nursery-school aide), and the story manages to be charmingly odd without compromising the real humanity of its players.  3 cameras
