Gloomy Glaswegian Wilbur (Jamie Sives) bungles another suicide attempt and returns to the care of his older brother Harbour (Adrian Rawlins), who manages their late father's cluttered old bookshop. A kind soul, Harbour soon takes in a young single mother (Shirley Henderson) and her 9-year-old daughter. The four manage an odd sort of household-in-disarray until a sad twist of fate forces them to be a real family. This bittersweet domestic drama from Danish director Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners) nonetheless has wonderful moments of mordant comedy (Wilbur is much beloved for being a dreadful nursery-school aide), and the story manages to be charmingly odd without compromising the real humanity of its players.
