Vipers Soul Club anniversary features guest DJ Andy Smith of Portishead

Several years have passed since the Soulcialism dance night debuted at Z-Lounge's small upstairs space. While it seemed a novelty at first -- a handful of record nerds gawping at each other while DJs played what we were told was "Northern Soul" -- the franchise and the style has proven surprisingly hardy in this town, surviving venue and personnel changes, attracting a rabid following, and cross-pollinating with other retro-dance nights.

Now a more recent spinoff of that original night, Vipers Soul Club, is celebrating its first anniversary this Sat., Jan. 31, at Shadow Lounge. In addition to Vipers regulars Gordy and Juddy (occasional CP contributor Justin Hopper), the night will feature Kris Rockwell as well as Jay Malls of long-running funk/hip-hop night The Big Throwback, whose set promises to include some long-lost cuts by local artists.

The big draw, however, comes from distant shores: famed London DJ Andy Smith. The Bristol native made a splash in the early 1990s, contributing samples to Portishead's first two albums and serving as tour DJ with the trip-hop band, among other groups. His well-received CD series The Document debuted in 1998 on Polygram, an eclectic mix of hip hop, funk, Northern Soul and more that led 365Mag to later describe him as the "originator of the major-label multi-genre mix album." More recently, he's released mixes of reggae (The Trojan Document) and Latin music (Let's Boogaloo Vol. IV), and digs deep into the roots of 1950s and '60s American soul music for his Lost & Found nights.
