This Just In: October 23 - 30

Meat the Champ

Summary: Brad Sciullo becomes the first to devour a giant hamburger ... just because. Reporter: Trina Orlando, KDKA Channel 2 Airtime: 2 minutes, 35 seconds on Oct. 17 Visuals: *Inside Denny's Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield, Pa., where the mammoth burger is served. Highlights: * When anchor Ken Rice describes the "Beer Barrel Belly Buster" as "a 15-pound hamburger with another 5 pounds of toppings," and asks, "Trina, was [Sciullo] in much discomfort?" * When Orlando, standing outside in Fayette County farmland and speaking at warp speed, says, "You know, he was doing all right now, but remember, this happened about five days ago. ... The burger that he ate ... [is] equal to roughly 60 of these quarter-pound burgers that most of us can fill up on for dinner." * When Orlando speaks of Sciullo's insatiable appetite: "Sciullo can eat raviolis faster than most of us can count them. When it comes to wings, he can devour a half dozen in about 30 seconds. This weekend, Brad conquered one of the biggest hamburgers in the world." * When Sciullo describes his technique: "You have to keep focused -- you can't let your mind beat you. Almost don't look at it. Just keep chewing, keep moving your hands, keep working your jaws. I didn't talk the whole time. I just kept in concentration." * When Orlando elaborates, "Brad is also the world cannoli-eating champion and right now, he is training to compete against some of the fastest hot-dog eaters in the world." * When Sciullo reveals his daily training regimen: "I do 40 pieces of bubblegum, 20 minutes a day nonstop as fast as I can. That's the 'badlands technique.' It was taught to me by one of the veteran eaters." * When Orlando tells us, "When Brad isn't eating, you'll find him cooking at Pasta Lorenzo in Uniontown, where he challenges other people to eat this sandwich called the 'Italian Stallion.' Back in Clearfield, there is another burger called the 'Belly Bruiser' that weighs in at 50 pounds. Today, we asked Brad if he would be stepping up to the plate." * When Sciullo contemplates, "Well, I don't know. ... That's a banquet burger." * When Orlando ends, "Now the Italian Stallion ... if you eat it in under an hour you get a free T-shirt. If you're wondering if it's possible, Brad did it in just eight-and-a-half minutes." What We Learned: People will do anything for a free T-shirt. Unanswered Question: Seriously -- how do we really know this is one of the biggest hamburgers in the world? Facts, Trina, give us facts! News Value: 2. Slow down, Orlando. If Sciullo chews as fast as you babble, it's no wonder he's the champ.
