Thirty years ago, a man named Bruce opened a local ice cream parlor

Today, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream turns 30. 

On July 13, 1989, Bruce Reed opened the first Bruster’s in Bridgewater, Pa., just outside of Pittsburgh. It wasn’t long before Reed’s single ice cream shop took off and expanded across the nation.

Now, with 200 shops across the United States and internationally serving about 25,000 customers a day (that’s 87,000 scoops of ice cream, according to its website), Bruster’s still holds to the standards set by Reed in 1989.

In 30 years, Bruster’s has created 150 flavors of ice cream, yogurt, sorbet, and Italian ice. Each flavor made the old-fashioned way with a slow-kettle process. On any given day, 24 freshly made flavors are featured in each shop. This, as Bruster’s says, makes “Bruster’s a Scoop Above the Rest.”

To celebrate their third decade, Bruster’s is giving fans a chance to win free ice cream. Enter the shop’s 30th Anniversary Sweepstakes, and you could be eating free scoops for a year. The shop has also released limited edition Founder's Creations, created by Reed himself, which include sea salt caramel with almonds and a peanut butter banana sundae. 

Bruster’s is still headquartered in Bridgewater with its first location less than a mile away. Head over to the flagship store this weekend and see where the legacy began.
