The Mechanic

Explosions! Fast cars! 20 people killed!

You know, a mechanic? A guy who fixes things, like people who need to be killed. Bishop (Jason Statham) is such a professional, and he's well compensated for his inventive and discreet skills. (Less clear is who exactly is paying him to take out assorted people, and why. But this is an action flick, not a book.) Then, out of guilt, Bishop takes on Steve (Ben Foster), the troubled son of an old pal, as his apprentice. Not such a smart move: Things go badly for everybody as a result. Not that it matters much: While Simon West's film is a re-boot of the more thoughtful 1972 Charles Bronson film, viewers will be expecting a Statham vehicle. And West delivers: fights, explosions, gadgets, fast cars, all while the roguishly handsome English action star keeps his cool in the steamy streets and bayous of Louisiana. Co-star Foster (3:10 to Yuma) is better than this glossy junk, but that shouldn't get in the way of anyone's popcorn-munching enjoyment. Starts Fri., Jan. 28.
