Re: “Porter in a Storm

Perhaps a less obvious irritant about le affaire Porter (bet homophobic's will have a field day with that description) is the continuing belief by many that being a particularly talented athlete equates in some way to being a "real man". Many sport fans (sycopohants?) blindly assign a variety of positive personal characteristics to sports figures based on little or nothing but their physical gifts. This is particularly bothersonme when terms like "courage" and "toughness" are more readily offered in describing quarterbacks and linebackers than social workers or single parents struggling to raise kids. Who can really blame Porter for doing as he pleases and saying what he wants....after all, we sports fans created and continue to feed the monster. On a related note, the ultimate FB tough guy - Vince Lombardi - counted among his favorite players Jerry Smith...an All-Pro tight end who died of AIDS.
