It's true: The diagnosis of shaken baby has become extremely controversial. While the symptoms that define the syndrome CAN be caused by abuse, doctors now recognize a long and growing list of legitimate medical conditions that can also trigger the distinctive pattern of bleeding and swelling inside the infant brain. The harshest critics of the classic model argue that a child's neck would break at forces lower than those required to burst blood vessels. The Innocence Network has now started appealing past shaking convictions.
