Writer Sarah Valentine will give a reading of her new novel “When I Was White,” as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards Fall Speaker Series at Carnegie Mellon University. A 2000 alumna of Carnegie Mellon, Valentine is a widely published author and translator. Valentine’s acclaimed new memoir “When I Was White,” recounts Valentine’s upbringing in Pittsburgh as a mixed-race African American in a white family. “Publishers Weekly” calls the memoir “fervent and heartfelt… a disturbing and engrossing tale of deep family secrets.”
