The Semer record label was founded in Berlin in 1932 to record Jewish music. On November 9, 1938, more than 4,500 of the records were destroyed by the Nazis during Kristallnacht. Years of research in the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in many of the previously lost recordings being recovered, and the Semer Ensemble was formed. The Berlin-based Semer Ensemble brings the musicians of 1930s Berlin back to life after years of silence. New Jewish Music Berlin cabaret, Russian folk songs, Yiddish theater hits, operatic arias, and cantorial music are just a small sample of the group’s remarkable repertoire
