Re: “Sounds of China

Delighted with this performance last night. Not sure where the reference to electric guitars and synthesizers comes from, as the ensemble here played traditional Chinese acoustic instruments, and did so with exceptional skills and talent. 8 players + Ma, who added some lilting and airy vocalization to a couple of the pieces. All original works, demonstrating some influences from western music, Mas compositions were stunning and beautiful, strong on syncopation and great percussion, with occasional subtle strains of Brazilian jazz that would have suited Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. With a post performance Q&A, assisted by translation from Mandarin, this was an exceptional evening of great music and cultural exchange. I hope they can return to Pittsburgh in the future. I would be very happy to see them again.
