Prantl’s famous burnt almond torte is being made into a new beer

Pittsburgh-based Prantl’s Bakery has earned a national reputation among cake lovers for its burnt almond torte — now they’re bringing the famous flavor to beer cans.

Prantl’s announced Thursday that it’s teamed up with brewing company Platform Beer Co. to create “Torte,” a blonde ale inspired by the iconic dessert. Platform is based in Cleveland, but announced in January that it plans to build a brewery in Garfield, according to a press release.

“As we were looking to create a space in Pittsburgh, we kept hearing about the Burnt Almond Torte,” Platform’s Matt Subel told WTAE. “We had just started testing out some dessert-inspired sours, and they have been some of our most successful releases.”

Prantl’s burnt almond torte was created by owner Henry Prantl nearly 50 years ago. Besides being a local favorite, the cake has also gained national acclaim — recent accolades include the title of "best cake in Pennsylvania" from the Food Network in 2018, as well as the best cake ever made in America by the Huffington Post in 2014.

The Torte ale will be released to the public on April 12 in Platform’s Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati tasting rooms, according to Platform’s Instagram. The beer will also be available at various retailers and craft beer stores throughout Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania starting on April 15, including a limited number of Giant Eagle locations in Ohio and Pittsburgh.
