PITT IS RANKED, AGAIN

Coming off of their miracle 33-30 quadruple-overtime win at Notre Dame yesterday, the Pitt Panthers are once again ranked in the top 25. I'm guessing that they're the only team who's ever lost to Bowling Green, yielded 54 against Rutgers and still [gotten] ranked, but I suppose that says something about the quality and/or style of their victories.

The improbable nationally televised victory yesterday is part of a developing trend under Dave Wannstedt: big wins on the road. The Panthers seem to struggle at Heinz Field, but on the road, they've been all aces of late, knocking off West Virginia, South Florida and now, the Irish.

Maybe this win will silence Beano Cook (who I'm a big fan of, by the way), who's implied on a number of radio appearances this season that Pitt's roster did not hold a candle to Notre Dame's. I don't have the exact quote, but I believe it was something along the lines of "Pitt has about four guys Notre Dame would recruit."

Happy Halloween

I filled up the bowl as soon as I got home yesterday and dashed out to sit on the stoop. Our neighborhood is insane on Halloween -- last year we had over 150 trick-or-treaters. This year the turnout was a little bit lighter, but I still emptied the giant bowl and refilled it once. Lots of bumblebees, pirates, a Hannah Montana, one vampire in a Barack Obama T-shirt, and a ton of little punkins among the crowds. Princesses for days. Lots of moms and dads in charge of carrying pillowcases full of candy too heavy to drag home. One tiny policeman in little bitty glasses like the kid from Jerry Maguire who promised sincerely not to arrest me. My neighbor and I laughed at the kids without costumes and the greedy ones. By the time it had gotten cold enough to grab a jacket, the crowds had disappeared to feast on their sugary goodies and I came inside to watch a scary movie.
