OVER THE HEDGE

Yikes! A crew of woodland creatures wake up from hibernation to find suburbia on their turf. And just in time, a wily raccoon appears to help them navigate the riches of human life (mmmm, corn chips). This animated comedy, adapted form the comic strip and directed by Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick, is a cut above the recent slew of talking-animal films. Hedge is funny in an easy, natural way ... no snarky jokes for the adults or pop-culture winks ... and features a top-notch voice cast, including Garry Shandling, Steve Carrell, Wanda Sykes and Bruce Willis. The film effectively captures the woodland gang's trepidation and wonderment at a mysterious world they don't understand; it's a perspective we humans neglect to consider, how a suburban lawn might initially baffle, and then corrupt a wild creature. Best of all, Hedge delivers its message about friendship and loyalty without being obvious or cloying. Starts Fri., May 19. (AH)
