Nubya Garcia

There’s been a resurgence of jazz-influenced genres in the U.K., and London-based saxophonist and composer, Nubya Garcia, is one of the driving forces. Creating music that belongs more on musty dancefloors than in country clubs, Garcia’s strain of modern jazz gives a nod to her upbringing with Caribbean parents. It's mostly minimal in instrumentation (mostly Garcia on tenor sax with a backing rhythm section), but the compositions are engrossing and just the right amount of complex. Witness this burgeoning talent at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.
