New concert series CP Remixed debuts this Thursday
Angry disco: DJ Edgar Um

This Thursday, City Paper kicks off a brand-new quarterly concert series highlighting the cream of the local underground scene, entitled CP Remixed. The debut show, which takes place Thu., Oct. 9 at the WYEP Community Broadcast Center, features a lineup offering a strong rhythmic component, augmented with more experimental and avant-garde touches.

While Ohmu has only played live a couple of times, you'll likely recognize the duo's members -- Jason Kirker of The Modey Lemon and Tony Patella of filmic synth destructors Zombi, who collaborate on krautrock grooves that blend live electronics and acoustic percussion. Also on deck is David Bernabo's razor-tight ensemble Assembly, which combines repetitive motifs with soulful electric piano and skronking saxophone licks. Rounding out the bill are Andres Ortiz-Ferrari of Discuss performing a solo electronic set, and prominent local DJ and promoter Edgar Um working the turntables between sets, spinning "motorik Afro-skree and angry disco."

It's not dance music in the typical sense, but there will be plenty for your feet to lock onto as you feed your head. Speaking of which, did we mention that there's free beer (from Penn Brewery) and eats (from Quiet Storm)?

Each CP Remixed event will feature a different local music-industry professional as guest curator, selecting the groups to perform. The next installment, on Thu., Jan. 15, also at WYEP, will be curated by Gregg Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk, the Pittsburgh-based mashup artist who has taken the world's dance floors by storm; the lineup will include DJ Cutups, multi-disciplinary sound artist Michael Johnsen, and percussive duo Italian Ice. Future curators include Ben Harrison, associate curator for performance at The Andy Warhol Museum (and now also involved with the Three Rivers Arts Festival), and Manny Theiner, promoter and frequent CP contributor.

CP Remixed featuring Ohmu, David Bernabo + Assembly, Discuss and DJ Edgar Um, and curated by Aaron Jentzen. 7-11 p.m. Thu., Oct. 9. WYEP Community Broadcast Center, 67 Bedford Square, South Side. $6 suggested donation. All ages. 412-316-3342 x138 or www.pghcitypaper.com
