I think it's funny that I'm the first comment on this article and it is April 15. This just tells me that other people are wise enough to ignore Mark Brentley. But I'll take the bait.
Mark Brentley is stupid. His obstinacy stems from either an unwillingness or a complete inability to understand the complexities of an urban school district. His hatred for people of a different skin color and for those with ideas different from his (regardless of skin color) only confirms his stupidity. Make no mistake, this man hates. The worst we could do, and this article is guilty of doing it, is to indulge the myth that "Brentley's anger is deeply rooted in his belief that racism is pervasive in the city school district's policies ... and the people who help craft them," or even worse, that he is the “conscience” of the school board as I have read in other articles. Brentley's anger is a racist's anger rooted in disgust for the "other" that he hates. His feelings about school district are a symptom, not a cause. He sees White school board members and White’s in general as less than human and insidiously evil. He sees the education of non-Black city students as not worth a modicum of thought. It is even questionable how much he really cares about the education of Black students. If one looks at his track record, you will see a man whose sick obsession with uncovering the school board’s “racism” leads him to sacrifice opportunities to improve the situation of Black students through negotiation. As is typical, the City Paper has waffled in its analysis of a controversial Black politician, even though he is an overt racist. The truth is that the school board needs a person who truly cares about the education of all of our children, and not about demonizing others. I believe that the individuals who elected Mark Brentley in the first place let their own ignorance and prejudice cloud their judgment. I hope that things have changed.
