MARILYN HOTCHKISS' BALLROOM DANCING AND CHARM SCHOOL

The gist of Randall Miller's ensemble dramedy is familiar ... that people should seek comfort and connection, no matter how curious or trivial the opportunity. Such an act spurs depressed widower Frank (Robert Carlyle) into an anachronistic dance school, where, upon being drawn into the lives of his classmates, he ... surprise! ... finds release and happiness. Marilyn is a small-scale charmer that may satisfy fans of the sentimental self-improvement genre who are willing to overlook some of the amateurish acting, wild shifts in tone and creaky plot devices (among the worst, an unbelievable relationship between siblings Donnie Wahlberg and Marisa Tomei). The cast is rounded out with other reliable players ... John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, David Paymer ... though Brazilian spitfire Sonia Braga gets short shrift. Its heart is in the right place, but Marilyn moves with two left feet. Starts Fri., May 19. Oaks (AH)
