Liberty Avenue Deli & Smoothies | Restaurant Reviews | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper

"My turkey flies out the door," says Kim Pitts, proprietor of the newly opened Liberty Avenue Deli & Smoothies, just down the road from the Bloomfield Bridge. OK, not literally. But, the birds were baked fresh on the premises the night before, which is why turkey sandwiches are among the New York-style deli's biggest sellers.

Pitts explains she is aiming for a healthy take on the classic deli atmosphere. "It's just trying to put that all together to issue out to the people of the world, to just get a good healthy lunch," she says. "With me having children, I try to instill into them to eat healthy."

The tuna and pasta salads are hand-prepared by Pitts, and the turkey and corned beef -- customer favorites -- are both cooked fresh every night. The Firecracker Italian, Pitt's favorite, piles on Italian meats with hot-pepper cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and hot pepper rings on ciabatta bread.

While most of the sandwiches and wraps are meaty classics like clubs and reubens, there are options for vegetarians. There's a veggie wrap and sandwich, both of which come with cucumbers, mushrooms, cheese and dressing. The pasta salad with noodles, tomatoes, olives, cukes, cheese, onions and dressing is fresh and perky.

There are also plenty of the sides you'd expect: Big, whole pickles float in a jar on the counter, and there are chips, cole slaw and pretzels. The dessert selection is pretty tantalizing, too, offering cookies, cheesecake and strawberry shortcake.

Smoothies, made with both fresh fruit and coffee, are a refreshing touch. The summery sounding Peach Pizzazz and Brazilian Orchards tempted, but I opted for a chai smoothie, which was wonderfully spiced with just the right hit of sweetness.

If strapped for time, add a Doctor's Garden Meal Replacement supplement to a smoothie for nutrition on the go. There are also a few options with the much-buzzed-about antioxidant supplement acai.

Now, there's no need to travel for a Manhattan-style deli lunch -- just cruise over to Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield for the next best thing.
