Re: “Truer Words

Anyone who takes the time, and usually in writing a memoir, pain, must always be taken seriously. James Frey's 'A Million Little Pieces' is a compelling read, but I was left reeling when I entered the author's name into the search engine and discovered the controversy surrounding his story. After such a powerful story I was left in doubt to which parts had been wholly based on fact. I'm sad about that doubt, because I believe that those of us who set about memoir writing do so because we have a story that needs to be told, perhaps for a variety of genuine reasons. I don't think that the memoir should be treated as a creative work, but as a writer, I also believe it can't be done without creativity to add a structure to the story. If you are writing about your life, and digging deep down into your own roots, you will know that the truth never lies.
