Just a few weeks before what would have been Maya Angelou’s 90th birthday, the stage adaptation of her memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, makes its regional premiere in Pittsburgh. The landmark work explores the challenges Angelou experienced growing up black and female in the South during the 1930s. Now in its 21st season, Prime Stage has a history of presenting American literary adaptations. This latest will be directed by Monteze Freeland, Quantum Theatre’s director of education, and will include live music performed by pianist Robert Doswell, of the Afro American Music Institute. -RA
