Guitarist David Fiuczynski debuts fusion trio with Dave Throckmorton and Tony Grey

With an approach involving a multifaceted fusion of jazz, funk and jam-band elements, guitarist David Fiuczynski definitely merits the nickname "Fuze." A New England Conservatory grad who now teaches at Berklee, Fuze studied with jazz greats Dave Holland and Joe Maneri, and also absorbed strains of Indian, Turkish and Chinese music. In the 1990s, he led Screaming Headless Torsos, who offered a more technical, jazzier version of the Chili Peppers' funk-rock that never caught on in the pop market.

"Jazz fans were checking them out, though," recalls Pittsburgh drummer Dave Throckmorton, "and a lot of guitar players and drummers for sure."

Fuze's resume includes work with keyboardist John Medeski, Me'Shell Ndegeocello and Japanese pianist Hiromi. His newest project is a trio with British bassist Tony Grey and Throckmorton, who plays in Thoth Trio and Opek, and recently released the CD Smash Your Wagon with guitarist Rick Mals. The trio debuts with three shows in the Pittsburgh region this weekend, at the start of a short tour.

"It's groove-based stuff and funky electric jazz, which should appeal to jam kids as well as jazz-fusion fans," says Throckmorton. "I often [back up] singer-songwriters, which I'm happy with, but my biggest love is to play creative instrumental music. Hooking up with Tony and Fuze should lead us to more like-minded guys, which would allow me to play a lot more in this vein."
