Grandview Bakery

Mount Washington gets a much-appreciated bakery.

About a year and a half ago, the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation canvassed the neighborhood to ask residents what kind of businesses they'd like to see open in the area. One of the top requests was a bakery. So, Vickie Pisowicz decided to satisfy the community's sweet tooth.

On Oct. 11, the Mount Washington resident opened Grandview Bakery, a large, full-service bake shop offering everything from doughnuts and cakes to pies and chocolate. So far, Pisowicz says that the bakery, located in a former drug store on Shiloh Street, has been embraced by neighbors.

"They're really glad to see a bakery in the community," she says, noting that the bakery sold out of its entire selection of baked goods just three hours into its grand opening. "The support has been overwhelming."

Grandview is much bigger than your average bakery. The right side of the store is stocked with baking and decorating supplies, and a room in the back will soon host birthday parties. At one spot, you can even watch the bakers in action through a large glass window.

"A bakery is a fun, happy place," says Pisowicz, who employs three full-time bakers. "For little kids, they can come see how [baking] is done."

According to Pisowicz, popular items include their muffins and breads (especially the rye), as well as seasonal offerings like pumpkin rolls. But, she says, "Our yummy doughnuts are the biggest seller by far."
