Attention snackers: Downtown gets a pretzel shop

Rob and Genalle Day know a thing about offering treats Downtown that are a little different. The couple owns Sweetlix Yogurt and Pittsburgh Popcorn Company, known for such unusual flavors as buffalo wing and thin mint.

GoPretzel is the Days' latest culinary venture. The storefront shop, on Liberty Avenue, opened in early September, and offers sweet and savory hand-made pretzels with a line of unique dipping sauces.

"Downtown didn't have any pretzel places," explains Rob. "And it lacked places to go grab a good, quick snack."

The pretzels are baked fresh using all-natural ingredients, and served hot. Current varieties include toasted almond, cinnamon sugar, pepperoni and cheese, jalapeño and cheese, and pumpkin. And Rob says they'll add more, including a special flavor of the week, such as garlic-parmesan. GoPretzel also features a "pretzel dog," an all-beef frank wrapped in a hot, salty pretzel.

Of course, you need something to dip it in. Mustard (Dijon, sweet or hot) is a standard condiment, but GoPretzel sauces also include cheddar cheese, a sweet glaze, Nutella and Dutch chocolate.

Pittsburgh history buffs will want to check out the shop's interior. The exposed-brick walls are adorned with Port Authority memorabilia from years past. Rob reckons this ephemera is a good fit for GoPretzel. After all, he says, "A lot of people running in and getting pretzels are bus riders."
