Mike Watt's knee hasn't completely recovered from an injury sustained on last summer's Stooges tour, but the punk veteran is now on a 52-day, 51-gig tour promoting his third rock opera, Hyphenated Man. He plays Brillobox this weekend; Neighbours (CP music editor Andy Mulkerin's band, in the interest of full disclosure) opens.


How do you keep going despite a serious injury?
I just try to keep perspective. For all the lame shit, there's some good shit. In the early punk scene ... if you weren't into it, it wasn't going to get done. I'm all into talking and ideas and all this, but there's something about acting on stuff.

After 30 years, do you still like touring in a van?
People take time off and take vacations to travel around like this. We realized this from the early tours: There is the "B" word, "burden," but there's also this "O" word, "opportunity."

How did Hieronymous Bosch's paintings influence the album?
In The Minutemen, we used to use all the little things to make one big thing. I think that's what he did. These pictures are made of lots of little pictures.

In Hyphenated Man, are you talking to yourself?
The whole thing is supposed to be me thinking out loud and confronting myself. The middle [age] years are trippy. That's why I wanted to write about it.

Is the new album self-released?
Yeah. I've got a lot of projects in the pipeline and I figure they're going to come every couple of months. I won't have to do any kind of dance. It'll happen because I want it to happen.
