DIG!

For seven years, Ondi Timoner documented the drug abuse, touring, slow rise to fame, and eventual downward spiral of two promising rock bands: the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols. A cautionary tale for any musician hoping to brave the Machiavellian recording industry, Dig! tells the story of BJM leader Anton Newcombe, a possibly schizophrenic train wreck of a rock star, and his industry rival, Dandy Warhol singer Courtney Taylor, who chooses to navigate the corporate seas with relative grace and élan. After two hours of grainy, hand-held footage, both bands have self-destructed. Newcombe, who sees himself as a prophetic Jesus figure, repels both his bandmates and his audience with temper tantrums. And the Warhols fall out of favor with their record label after low sales, despite becoming a household name among pop fans and indie rockers. The tragicomic Dig!, which won the 2004 Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, is as honest and unflinchingly raw as the lives it portrays. Starts Fri., Dec. 10. Squirrel Hill
