Critics' Pick: Joe Pug and Jason Narducy at Club Cafe

I once wrote on a pizza box for Joe Pug during one of his shows. My original posterboard that read “I wouldn’t mind ridin’ around with you, Joe!” — based on the hook from ballad “Speak Plainly, Diana” — was confiscated by security, forcing me to improvise. My ad-hoc effort was fitting for the ad-libbed writing style Pug presents — it’s rare for the Chicago-based college-drop-out-turned-carpenter to write an entire song that stays within one specified narrative. Moving past the dude-playing-a-guitar genre, the tunes on Windfall extend deep into the world of driving piano and atmospheric noise. Pug will unveil the variety alongside Jason Narducy, of Superchunk and Bob Mould Band, at Club Café.

8 p.m. 56-58 S. 12th St., South Side. $17.
