CosmoSonics' debut, Junk Rock ... For Lovers!

The CosmoSonics
Junk Rock ... For Lovers!
Riffhaus Records

The CosmoSonics have the tonic for what ails you. While the band name is new, the players are staples on the underground rock and punk scenes of our fair city. Three are former Science Fiction Idols: Gary D'Grave (vocals, guitars), Angel O (drums) and Harrison Dray (bass). After recruiting guitarist Chaz, formerly of Hallowmas, the CosmoSonics immediately began writing, recording and playing, not coming up for air and not pausing for one millisecond.

The brand-spanking-new album, Junk Rock ... For Lovers! was recorded at Soundscape Studios and engineered by Doug Kasper. But what is "junk rock"? According to D'Grave, it's the infusion of many different kinds of music, blended into "exciting, catchy, fun shit." The CosmoSonics take their influences from glam rock, punk, pop, bluesy hard rock and heavy metal; blended together, that equals glampunkmetalpopblues. Got that?! Let's move on.

This 13-track rock extravaganza is an unapologetic, bombastic, raunchy ride -- nothing melancholy or depressing here -- and it's bursting with rock anthems: On "Rave It Up!!" the boys snarl, "Hey, hey, if you want to play, it's rock 'n' roll baby, so bombs away." The musicianship is polished but edgy, the songwriting original, and the tunes will force you to shake your moneymaker. If this album doesn't jump-start your heart, you'd better check your pulse; if you don't like your music loud and proud, please continue shopping in the Adult Contemporary section.
