New releases from Before You, Committee for Getting Attention and The Tilt Room

Before You
Meet Me at Whisper Lake

Before You is planted firmly within the contemporary pop-punk idiom, but hints at some interesting departures from the formula. This five-song EP showcases the band's versatility (and guitar chops, with some allusions to Van Halen). Tunes about relationships and nostalgia and all the classic pop-punk stuff. Good work!

BEFORE YOU EP RELEASE. 6 p.m. Fri., Feb. 17. Smiling Moose, 1306 E. Carson St., South Side

Committee for Getting Attention
Your Face Here

Seven tracks of charming lo-fi folk; nothing polished or professional about this outfit, but that's the point — at times the production mimics early Americana recordings a la Alan Lomax. A little despondent, a little angry, the music (while mostly quiet) shows its punk roots. Hand-screened hand-written album art completes the package.

COMMITTEE FOR GETTING ATTENTION CD RELEASE 7 p.m. Wed., Feb. 15. Mr. Roboto Project, 5106 Penn Ave., Bloomfield

The Tilt Room
Confront Your World

Performing as a bass-and-acoustic-guitar duo is a bit of a challenge; Mike Swindell and Matt Dacierno rise to the task, creating arrangements that take advantage of each instrument's range and percussive possibilities. At over an hour, the debut release for this iteration of their band drags on a bit; even with the pair's songwriting chemistry, things start to sound a bit same-y as it progresses.
