The SPACE gallery art exhibit Unloaded looks at gun culture, and tonight's discussion, "Disarming Violence," features gun-control advocacy groups and local political figures.

“Disarming Violence” attendees will hear remarks by representatives from CeaseFirePA, the Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP), Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Violence (CAV) and Mothers with a Voice. Also speaking are Pittsburgh City Council President Bruce Kraus and Erika Strassburger, chief of staff to City Councilman Dan Gilman.

Presenters and attendees will discuss the issues brought up by the exhibit as well as opportunities to get involved in organized efforts to reduce violence.

Unloaded, a multimedia exhibit, explores historical and social issues surrounding the availability, use and impact of guns. It includes sculpture, painting, photography and video installations by artists from around the world.

“As an organizer, I try to bring together people who are investigating and working toward solving issues of concern to me,” says Carnegie Mellon University art professor Susanne Slavick, the exhibit's curator.

Slavick joined with the groups at tonight's talk following a year in which Pittsburgh’s gun-related homicides rose to 71 from 50.

“Disarming Violence” takes place tonight from 6-7:30 p.m. It is free.

Unloaded remains on display at SPACE through April 26. The gallery is located at 812 Liberty Ave., Downtown.
