Fundraiser for Homestead Fire Victims this Saturday

Posted By on Mon, Jan 26, 2015 at 10:42 AM

A fundraiser will be held this Saturday for victims of a 6-alarm fire that left nine people homeless and five buildings damaged in Homestead's business district. The estimated cost of damage is $2 million.

The fundraiser, "MaryEllen's Birthday Party Fundraiser for the Victims of the Homestead Fire," will be hosted by ANEW Community Institute and was originally planned as a fundraiser for the organization.

“Homestead is our home and our community and ANEW is in the business of building community and coalitions of community. I felt compelled to use this event to help our neighbors in their time of need,” President Maryellen Deckard said in a press release.

According to law enforcement officials, the fire was intentionally set by a resident living above Concept Uniform at 237 East Eighth Ave., and who is now in the Allegheny County Jail.
