Black Detroit is a groundbreaking history of the struggles and resilience of African Americans from the city’s birth two hundred years ago until the present. Boyd explores the important contributions that many well-known individuals, institutions, and events – such Mayor Coleman Young and the automobile plant’s labor struggles – made to Detroit’s black experience. He also explores many lesser known individuals and organizations who made important contributions. Boyd is a political and cultural product of post-WWII Detroit and writes with intimate knowledge and compassion.
