City Paper readers picked Oakland’s stalwart for superhero scenes as Best Local Comic Book Store this year

Phantom of the Attic’s owner is admittedly “terrible at self-promotion.” Upon hearing City Paper readers voted Phantom as the first Best Local Comic Book Store winner in several years, Jeff Yandora turned to his readers for hype help. “Our customers are the best, and the reason we’re successful,” he says.

“Honored” by this latest designation for a business that has called Oakland home since 1983, Yandora doesn’t expect being among Pittsburgh’s “best” will become the business equivalent of Peter Parker being bit by a radioactive spider. At this point, Pittsburghers already think of Phantom of the Attic (pota-oakland.com) when they think about comics.

“Comics are a weird business, and every store finds a niche for what they do and the fan base they serve,” Yandora says. “Pittsburgh has always been a good city for comics in general, with a lot of options for customers.” But …

“It’s gratifying for [our] history to be recognized and rewarded.”
