A Night of Gamelan Music

Uploaded by John Ubinger
Fans of microtonal music, Steve Reich's Drumming, and propulsive, hypnotic group percussion should join the University of Pittsburgh for A Night of Gamelan at Bellefield Hall Auditorium. If you're unfamiliar, gamelan is a traditional Indonesian percussion ensemble that sounds similar to a group of xylophones or gongs, but there's really no way to explain its sound. So, hear it yourself. The program features Pitt graduate student Devon Tipp on the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) for a performance of "Cloudrest," by renowned composer Elizabeth Brown.
