A benefit for Anne Feeney finds Pittsburgh musicians supporting their own

Charleroi native Anne Feeney has covered some surprising ground -- a dozen years as a trial lawyer; a stint as president of the Pittsburgh Musicians' Union in the late 1990s. Yet she's remained remarkably consistent in some respects, namely, 30-plus years of combining activism and folk music. It's a commitment that's taken her far and wide since she started hitting the road in the 1990s and releasing a string of albums, including 2008's Dump the Bosses Off Your Back.

And now that Feeney's battling cancer, a bunch of musical friends -- and political ones -- are committed to dumping the medical bills off her back. On Sun., Dec. 12, they're all turning out at Mr. Smalls for a benefit concert; sponsoring committee includes Mike Stout, Liz Berlin and state Sen. Jim Ferlo. And all her traveling means Feeny has far-flung friends, too: A similar benefit show took place just last week, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The lineup for the Pittsburgh show packs plenty of firepower, including Joe Grushecky, Berlin, bluesman Billy Price, Justin Sane of Anti-Flag. The Newlanders, Tres Lads, Joe Munroe, Jack Erdie, Brad Yoder, Sue Power and Jeff Berman. More are also slated to perform. In addition to the massive outpouring of music, there will be a silent auction of items donated by local artists and musicians.

All proceeds from the event benefit Feeney, who expects to attend.

Just one question: What's Ferlo gonna play?
