Where to donate coats and other winter clothing

While winter is still a month away, temperatures are already dropping, and the first snow of the season is expected to hit Pittsburgh this week. It's important to stay warm in the cold, which is easy to do if you have the proper clothing, but many in the city are not so fortunate. Luckily, there are several organizations collecting coats, hats, gloves, and other winter-wear to donate to people experiencing homelessness or those otherwise in need.

Allegheny YMCA
What they're collecting: Men's clothing only. New and lightly used coats, hats, scarves, gloves, boots, thermals, and new socks.

When: Until Sat., Nov. 30
Who it benefits: Residents of the YMCA

Pittsburgh Mercy's Operation Safety Net
What they're collecting: New and lightly used men's and women's boots, larger men's winter coats (sizes 1X-3X)
Where: Wellspring Drop-In Center, 903 Watson St., Uptown or Pittsburgh Mercy, 249 S. 9th St., South Side. More information at facebook.com/pittsburghmercy or pittsburghmercy.org
When: Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (Wellspring) and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (Pittsburgh Mercy)
Who it benefits: People experiencing homelessness

Guardian Storage

What they're collecting: Gently used/new coats and new socks in all sizes
Where: Any Guardian Storage location. Visit their winter clothing drive site for more information.
When: Through Sat., Nov. 30
Who it benefits: The Salvation Army, Veterans Leadership Program

Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive
What they're collecting: Sweaters of all sizes

Free Stores
What they're collecting: In-season clothing and shoes for adults and children
Where: Free Store Wilkinsburg, 819 Penn Ave., Wilkinsburg or Free Store 15104, 420 Braddock Ave., Braddock.
When: Wilkinsburg donation hours are Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Braddock donation hours Tues. 11 a.m.–1 p.m., Thurs. 11 a.m.–1 p.m., Sat., 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
