Solidarity Defeats White Nationalism

This is the first of many events scheduled in protest against Donald Trump’s visit to Shale Insight, the annual natural gas conference being held this week at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Progressive Jewish group Bend the Arc Pittsburgh, which is hosting the rally, has written a long message to Trump in advance of the event: “In the wake of the shooting last year, Muslim neighbors in Pittsburgh and around the country raised money to support our Pittsburgh Jewish community. In the face of violence at the border, Pittsburgh’s Jewish community joined Jews around the country in demanding fair and safe immigration processes. And we’re just getting started. President Trump, we are here for all of us. And there is no place for your hatred and division in this community we are building together.” You can read the full message here.
Defend the Water: Day of Action
12-7 p.m. Wed., Oct. 23
Point State Park, Downtown
Fourteen environmental, political, and nonprofit groups, including People Over Petro, Breathe Project, and One Pennsylvania, are hosting a full day of events in response to the Shale Insight conference. At noon, the public is invited to “stand in solidarity with members of the Seneca, Sioux, Lakota, and other Native and faith leaders to protect our rivers and waters” at a Native Water Ceremony at Point State Park performed by indigenous leader Cheryl Angel. A march down Liberty Avenue starts at 1 p.m., followed by a rally outside the David Lawrence Convention Center, with music by members of Pittsburgh’s Afro Yaqui Music Collective. The day’s events end with a panel discussion called Decolonizing Green Power, focusing on the green energy efforts being made by Indigenous activists.
March for Truth

The Pittsburgh chapter of the Women’s March on Washington is joining with Indivisible Pittsburgh for a march calling for President Trump to be “impeached and removed” from office. Participants are encouraged to bring “signs supporting true American values of peace, liberty, and justice for all; an American or other flag to wave in support of those values; and a whistle to blow to thank those who are speaking out against the high crimes and misdemeanors of this administration.”
Peaceful Anti-Fracking Trump Protest
6-9 p.m. Wed., Oct. 23
Outside David L. Lawrence Convention Center, 1000 Fort Duquesne Blvd., Downtown
A final protest rally, hosted by OpenPittsburgh.Org and political candidates Bethany Hallam and Emily Kinkead, begins at the parking lot at Smallman and 12th Streets at 6 p.m., followed by a march to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center at 7 p.m. for a peaceful protest. Hallam and Kinkead will speak, and the event will include other local notables including environmental advocates and politicians, as well as poetry readings and live music. 
Renters' Rights Matter! Workshop

Do you know what your rights are as a renter in Pittsburgh? Join local nonprofit Hill District Consensus Group for its monthly educational workshop on housing justice with guest speaker Anne Wright, director of operations at Carnegie Mellon University’s Create Lab, on “Systematic Housing Displacement by Design.” Refreshments will be served.

A day of “service, study, and community” takes place in honor of the victims and the people affected by the deadly shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue on Oct. 27, 2018. Events include a Torah Study, Community Gathering, and a Healing Partnership Drop-in. The day also includes volunteer events at 32 different locations. Registration closes on Tue., Oct. 22 at Midnight, so sign up soon. As a testimony to the outpouring of support from friends and neighbors, look at the list of Community Service Opportunities: a majority of the events have already reached the maximum number of volunteers.
Get Out the Vote Postcard Writing

Help encourage your neighbors to vote in the November election by joining Pittsburgh’s arm of the National Council of Jewish Women for a Get Out The Vote postcard writing campaign. Sending postcards is a helpful reminder to bring people to the polls during a non-presidential election year, when voter turnout is typically lower. The event is nonpartisan and participants are asked to RSVP online by Wed., Oct. 23.
